I have a son. But he doesn’t let me take pictures of him. So I present to you, Buddy the Elf. He was aptly named by the shelter. We just didn’t realize it when we adopted him. He tried to jump into a television. He yells at the garbage can. He’s cost me $3500 in vet bills for a problem he didn’t seem to actually have. He screams at doors and then runs away when you open them. He chews phone cords. He throws himself at windows and his fat ass doesn’t fit in a window so he camps out on things near windows, ever the persistent animal though and tries daily to get in the window. He’s on a special diet. He will eat your chips if you leave them unattended. He ate an earwig in front of me. Not to mention countless Q-tips. I have been thinking about my solo cross-country road trip from 2022 so much lately, it’s wild. Someone on my YouTube channel asked where the rest of the videos were about the west coast and I went digging through photos and videos a week ago and haven’t been able to stop. I’ll make the videos for YouTube eventually, but in the meantime, I’m reliving some of the best times of my life. And honestly, resisting the urge to do it again. Like hard. Do you really need a trip like that twice in a lifetime? Maybe. And now that I know better about so many things, it would be easier this time. Gas is actually cheaper right now than when I set off that summer. Maybe I’ll teach a course on how to do a solo cross country road trip. It is the thing people ask about the most: “you went alone?” Yeah. I went alone. Was this the inspiration for Jeremy’s trip across the country in book 2 of The Blurred Lines Series? No. I’d already written that part when I hit the road. Was that book some pre-planning of my own trip? Maybe. He did spend leisurely hours doing the things he loved, eating gas station food and drinking bad coffee. But that’s fiction. My trip was real. And now I’m planning to write a novel about van life. Something I know nothing about but damn if my imagination isn’t on fire these days. Plus, I do camper life. The work before the work…😂 It rained a lot this week so I took the time to clean my office. It’s where I run my business, write my books, pretend I’m working. You know, the usual stuff. It’s also where I get distracted and plan trips I may never take, watch YouTube for hours wondering if I could make more money digital marketing lol and if buying a vintage camper and turning it into a mobile bookstore is probably the answer. I mean, I could sleep in the truck, right? My office is filled with things I love, right down to the cheap blue rug on the floor, and is my favourite place to work. And even though I’ve had three different offices over the last year, (lots of moving) this one is my fav. Fun fact: I painted the art on the walls. It’s Lake Louise. And I wrote some of the books on the shelf. And the white vase on my skinny shelf was a gift filled with flowers from my father when I got my tonsils out at 6 years old. Ahhhh shelving books… I do love a good shelf filled with books, but these happen to be a kajillion copies of my own books, that I wrote and finally unboxed after not selling as many as I’d hoped during my launch. Sure, my stories are contemporary romance novels of the spicy variety but the conflict and chaos of these stories is brought on by the humanity of my characters, specifically the things that make them tick: good and bad. So let’s talk about the bad. Willow: stuck in a revolving door life because of someone she knew long ago. Charlie: pretends to be in love to stifle the pain of long-lost love. Gale: doesn’t admit he needs people when all he wants is to be with someone he loves. Ava: replaces bad dating habits with bad one-night stand habits. Pick a vice already. Ellis: ignores his feelings because he can’t see the point of having them. Grant: pretends his life is exactly the way he wants it. There’s a theme here for sure: the characters of The Selfish Love Series will do anything for love. Except admit they need it. Because while unrequited love hurts, rejection and abandonment hurt more. So they do everything to protect their fragile hearts. Until they can’t resist anymore.
